Temperature and Heat

  • Temperature: A measure of the average kinetic energy of particles in a substance.
  • Heat: Energy transfer due to temperature difference.

Formula for Temperature Conversion:

°C = (°F - 32) × 5/9
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32

Specific Heat Capacity

  • The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance by 1 degree Celsius.

Formula for Specific Heat Capacity:

C = Q / (m × ΔT)

  • C: Specific heat capacity (J/g°C)
  • Q: Heat absorbed or released (J)
  • m: Mass of the substance (g)
  • ΔT: Change in temperature (°C)

Heat Transfer

  • Conduction: Heat transfer through direct contact between objects.
  • Convection: Heat transfer through the movement of a fluid (liquid or gas).
  • Radiation: Heat transfer through electromagnetic waves.

Formula for Heat Transfer by Conduction:

Q = kA(T2 - T1) / d

  • Q: Heat transfer (J)
  • k: Thermal conductivity (W/mK)
  • A: Surface area (m^2)
  • T2 and T1: Temperatures at the two ends (°C)
  • d: Distance between the surfaces (m)

Ideal Gas Law

  • Describes the behavior of an ideal gas, a theoretical gas that obeys the following equations:

Formula for Ideal Gas Law:

PV = nRT

  • P: Pressure (Pa)
  • V: Volume (m^3)
  • n: Number of moles
  • R: Universal gas constant (8.31 J/molK)
  • T: Temperature (K)

Applications of Gas Laws

  • Boyle's Law: Pressure is inversely proportional to volume (PV = constant).
  • Charles' Law: Volume is directly proportional to temperature (V/T = constant).
  • Gay-Lussac's Law: Pressure is directly proportional to temperature (P/T = constant).
  • Combined Gas Law: Relates pressure, volume, and temperature changes obeying the ideal gas law ((P1V1/T1) = (P2V2/T2)).

Kinetic Molecular Theory

  • Microscopic model for the behavior of gases.
  • Assumptions:

- Gas particles are in constant random motion. - Gas particles collide elastically with each other and the walls of the container. - The average kinetic energy of gas particles is proportional to the gas temperature.

Derivation of Ideal Gas Law from Kinetic Molecular Theory

  • Average kinetic energy of a gas particle:

E = (3/2)kT

  • Pressure exerted by gas particles on the container walls:
P = (1/3)nmv^2

  • Combining these equations with the ideal gas law (PV = nRT):

PV = (1/3)nmv^2 = (2/3)nE = nRT

Applications of Kinetic Molecular Theory

  • Explains the pressure, volume, and temperature behavior of gases.
  • Derives the ideal gas law and other gas laws.
  • Predicts the diffusion and effusion rates of gases.
